What Elite Athletes Do Differently

Hi Reader

As both an athlete and a coach, I’ve had the privilege of watching the world’s best perform — under pressure, in training, and beyond competition.

I’ve worked alongside them, studied their habits, and now, as a coach, I see firsthand what truly sets them apart.

Every day, I get to work with athletes who strive for greatness.

And I’ve seen the difference between those who rise to the top and those who plateau.

So, what separates elite athletes from everyone else?

It’s not just talent.

It’s not just hard work.

It’s their commitment to doing what others won’t—day in and day out.

Here’s what they do differently:

🔹 They show up when others make excuses.
Rain, fatigue, doubt — none of it stops them. They train when they don’t feel like it because they know discipline beats motivation.

🔹 They prepare relentlessly.
Elite athletes never just “turn up” to training. They arrive ready —having reviewed and analysed their last performance, extracted every lesson they can, and set clear intentions for what they need to improve. They don’t waste a session; they maximise it.

🔹 They stay open to new ways to improve.
They don’t settle for what’s comfortable. They experiment, adapt, and relentlessly seek ways to sharpen their edge. If there’s a 1% gain to be made, they’ll find it.

🔹 They embrace the tough moments.
Where others see obstacles, they see opportunities. Pressure fuels them. Setbacks don’t break them—they shape them.

🔹 They focus when others get distracted.
In a world full of noise, they master the art of narrowing their focus. They don’t just train their bodies—they train their minds to be unshakable.

Your Challenge:

This week, ask yourself:

What’s one thing I can start doing that most people won’t?

It could be an extra mindset drill, a new recovery habit, or pushing yourself outside your comfort zone.

The small decisions you make daily will define your path.

That’s how you separate yourself. That’s how you level up.

Stay positive, stay focused, and keep moving forward. Don't forget to reach out to me if you need help levelling up.

A roller coaster in an amusement park

Hi Reader I always felt nerves before competing — sometimes even during. But ironically, that wasn’t the hardest part for me. Once I was in the competition, I had control. I could double down on my process, focus on executing my routine, and adjust as needed to get the results I wanted. I could take care of my nutrition, stay hydrated, and find learning experiences in everything I did. The real challenge? The days and weeks leading up to competition. That stretch of time felt like a...

A woman with dreadlocks standing in front of a basketball hoop

Hi Reader As a child, I loved watching the Olympics. I would wake up early, captivated by sports I had never even seen before. I marveled at the grace, strength, and precision of these athletes. They seemed almost untouchable—living in a world I believed I could never reach. That’s why, when I eventually started competing at an elite level, I struggled with imposter syndrome. I distinctly remember the first time I received my accreditation for a major competition. It had my photo, my name,...

A couple of bananas sitting next to each other

Hi Reader I remember competing at a World Cup when one of my teammates grabbed a banana from the breakfast buffet for each member of the team. When I asked why, she simply said, "It settles your nerves." I didn’t think much of it at the time, but I happily added a banana to my toolkit for managing pressure. Did it work? Actually, yes. Back then, I chalked it up to the placebo effect, but I wasn’t about to dismiss something that helped me stay calm. Turns out, she was onto something. When we...
