The Banana Effect: Small Bite, Big Mindset Gains

Hi Reader

I remember competing at a World Cup when one of my teammates grabbed a banana from the breakfast buffet for each member of the team.

When I asked why, she simply said, "It settles your nerves."

I didn’t think much of it at the time, but I happily added a banana to my toolkit for managing pressure.

Did it work? Actually, yes.

Back then, I chalked it up to the placebo effect, but I wasn’t about to dismiss something that helped me stay calm.

Turns out, she was onto something.

When we talk about mindset, we often focus on mental strategies, but what you fuel your body with plays a huge role in how well your mind functions—especially under pressure.

For example, stress and competition can elevate cortisol levels, leading to fatigue, poor focus, and slower recovery.

But did you know that potassium-rich foods (like bananas, sweet potatoes, and spinach) can help offset the effects of cortisol?

Proper nutrition supports mental clarity, emotional control, and peak performance.

Key Nutrients for a Strong Mindset:

🥑 Potassium – Helps counteract cortisol and supports muscle function.
🍫 Magnesium – Found in dark chocolate and nuts, aids relaxation and stress management.
🐟 Omega-3s – Found in salmon and flaxseeds, boost focus and cognitive function.
🍎 Stable Blood Sugar – Balanced meals prevent energy crashes that affect decision-making under pressure.

Just like you train your mind and body, fueling yourself properly gives you an edge in competition.

Take a moment to reflect—are you eating in a way that supports your best mindset?

If you have any questions or want to chat more about nutrition and performance, let me know!

Stay positive, stay focused, and keep moving forward.

Hi Reader I always felt nerves before competing — sometimes even during. But ironically, that wasn’t the hardest part for me. Once I was in the competition, I had control. I could double down on my process, focus on executing my routine, and adjust as needed to get the results I wanted. I could take care of my nutrition, stay hydrated, and find learning experiences in everything I did. The real challenge? The days and weeks leading up to competition. That stretch of time felt like a...

Hi Reader As both an athlete and a coach, I’ve had the privilege of watching the world’s best perform — under pressure, in training, and beyond competition. I’ve worked alongside them, studied their habits, and now, as a coach, I see firsthand what truly sets them apart. Every day, I get to work with athletes who strive for greatness. And I’ve seen the difference between those who rise to the top and those who plateau. So, what separates elite athletes from everyone else? It’s not just...

Hi Reader As a child, I loved watching the Olympics. I would wake up early, captivated by sports I had never even seen before. I marveled at the grace, strength, and precision of these athletes. They seemed almost untouchable—living in a world I believed I could never reach. That’s why, when I eventually started competing at an elite level, I struggled with imposter syndrome. I distinctly remember the first time I received my accreditation for a major competition. It had my photo, my name,...
