Embrace Who You Are Now, Not Who You Were

As a child, I loved watching the Olympics.

I would wake up early, captivated by sports I had never even seen before.

I marveled at the grace, strength, and precision of these athletes.

They seemed almost untouchable—living in a world I believed I could never reach.

That’s why, when I eventually started competing at an elite level, I struggled with imposter syndrome.

I distinctly remember the first time I received my accreditation for a major competition.

It had my photo, my name, and the word "Athlete" boldly printed underneath.

I laughed. I simply couldn’t accept myself as someone worthy of that label.

I had a picture in my head of what an athlete was and I definitely did not match that picture.

Deep down, I still saw myself as that young child who lacked natural talent, the one who wasn’t "meant" to be an athlete.

And that fear — of proving my childhood beliefs right — showed up at the worst possible times.

In match play, I’d feel my hands shake, my stomach turn, and my self-talk became incredibly negative, judgmental, and downright mean.

I wasn’t just doubting myself—I was tearing myself down.

I basically set the stage for my own failure, which then sparked that familiar voice in my head whispering, "Why am I even here?"

We like to give things fancy labels like Imposter Syndrome, but at its core, it all comes down to fear.

I was afraid to let go of outdated beliefs about myself.

I was afraid to step into the reality of the athlete I had become.

I was afraid that if I truly owned my success, I’d somehow be exposed as a fraud.

Can you relate?

Are there old voices from your past — whether from childhood, past failures, or other people’s opinions — that still hold you back?

Here’s the truth: Who you were is not who you are now.

You have put in the work, made the sacrifices, and pushed through challenges.

You did not stumble into this level of performance—you earned it.

Read that again - it's important!

But until you fully embrace the athlete you are today, fear will continue to stand in your way.

And here’s something else you need to hear:

You don’t need to prove it to yourself by hitting a certain score on the scoreboard.

Your worth as an athlete isn’t measured by a number, a ranking, or a single competition.

The athlete you are today isn’t waiting to arrive—you’re already here.

You don’t need permission to own your success.

You don’t need to justify why you deserve to be here.

You do deserve it.

So ask yourself:

  • What outdated beliefs are you still carrying?
  • What fear is keeping you from stepping fully into your potential?

Because the version of you who doubted themselves is not the version standing on the field, the range, the track, or the stage today.

It’s time to let go of the past. Step into your power. Compete like the athlete you know you are.

You are ready for this.
