Handling Criticism Like a Champion


Hi Reader

This week has been full of ups and downs.

The biggest up? I was honored to be named the NZ National Compound Coach for another year, supporting the team as they compete in the World Cups.

I truly believe in this team, and having another season to work together is not just a privilege—it’s a crucial foundation for high performance.

This was incredible news for me.

Not long after, I came across my first public negative comment.

It was an interesting moment—but I know exactly where I stand.

My focus is, and always will be, on doing good, supporting others, and helping athletes reach their full potential.

That’s what truly matters, and that’s where my energy will stay.

It was however, a powerful reminder that no matter how much we work on our mindset, small moments can still challenge us.

Our brains are wired to focus on the negative, and if we’re not careful, one harsh comment can drown out a hundred positive ones.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, remember the importance of staying focused on what truly matters and not letting outside noise take up valuable space.

It’s an unfortunate reality of our world today that athletes at all levels of sport face negativity and online criticism constantly.

If you’re serious about growth in your sport, criticism is inevitable.

Some of it will be constructive.

Some of it—especially online—is just noise.

Even when you know it’s just noise, it can still get under your skin.

So how do you handle it without letting it mess with your mindset?

1️⃣ Separate Truth from Trash

Not all criticism is bad. Coaches, teammates, and even competitors can give feedback that helps you improve. But online trolls? They’re not offering wisdom—they’re seeking reactions. Learn to tell the difference.

2️⃣ Stay in Control

Trolls want to rattle you. Don’t give them the satisfaction. Keep your focus on what truly matters—your performance, your progress, and your goals.

3️⃣ Use It as Fuel

Instead of letting negativity drag you down, flip the script. Use it as motivation to train harder, refine your skills, and prove (to yourself, not them) what you’re capable of.

4️⃣ Protect Your Energy

You don’t have to engage. You don’t have to read every comment. Control what you consume and where you place your attention.

Winning starts in the mind.

Champions don’t waste time arguing with critics—they let their actions speak.

While people's words can have an impact, your true worth is defined by how you show up, day in and day out—something completely within your control, unlike the negativity of others.

Keep that at the front of your mind, stay strong, and keep pushing forward. 💪
